Chapter 2

Review Questions:

  1. How can Paul say that the Jews “practice the very same things” when their response would be, “but we don’t do those things you just described?

Answer:  While the Jews did not practice paganism, they did practice the lifestyle, which is rejecting God.  The way that they did this was by refusing to do what God desired of them.  God had practiced kindness, forbearance, and patience toward the Jews to lead them to repentance (Romans 2:4).  Instead of repenting, they maintained a “hard and impenitent heart” (Romans 2:5).  Paul’s promise to them was that their lack of repentance would have the effect of “storing up the wrath of God’s righteous judgment” (Romans 2:5) just as it was being stored up for the pagans.

  1. What was the purpose of God showing the Jews “kindness, forbearance and patience?” (see Romans 2:4).

Answer:  God had practiced kindness, forbearance, and patience toward the Jews to lead them to repentance.

  1. In Romans 2:6-11, Paul describes two different groups.  How would you describe the difference in the two groups?
    1. Eternal life group:

Answer:  This group seeks glory and honor and immortality by patience in well-doing (see Romans 2:7).  Thus these people will receive glory and honor and peace (see Romans 2:10).

    1. Wrath and fury group:

Answer:  This group is characterized by refusing to obey the truth and obeying unrighteousness (see Romans 2:8).  The result of their behavior is tribulation and distress (see Romans 2:9).

  1. What do the following scriptures by the apostle Paul contribute to our understanding of the judgment?
    1. I Corinthians 15:35-38; 42-44; 50:

Answer:  Flesh and blood cannot and will not inherit the kingdom of God.  Rather the fleshly body that is buried is perishable but the body that God will give us in the resurrection is imperishable.  It will be a spiritual body that will last through all of eternity.

    1. Acts 17:30-31:

Answer: There is a day, some time in the future, when Jesus Christ will judge all men.  We know this because God raised him from the dead.

    1. II Thessalonians 1:6-10:

Answer:  When the judgment day comes, Jesus and his angels will appear from heaven.  On that day, Jesus will be glorified and marveled at by believers and they will receive relief.  However, those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of Jesus Christ will have a vengeance of flaming fire inflicted upon them.  God considers this to be just.

    1. Philippians 2:9-13:

Answer:  There will come a time, on the judgment day, when every knee will bow to Jesus and every tongue will confess that he is Lord.  Therefore, we should work out our salvation with fear and trembling while keeping our will (attitude) and works (actions) in line with his good pleasure.

  1. Reread Romans 2:17-24.  Consider what Paul says in Romans 2:13, Jesus’ statement in John 13:17, and James’ statement in James 1:22-25.  What is the message for us today?

Answer:  Hearing and knowing are important.  However, what is pleasing to God is when those who take what they have heard and know and put it into practice in their lives by doing what he wants.  It is this group that will be justified.
