Answers to Lesson Six:

Ephesians

Chapter Five

Review Questions:

Question One:  In Hebrews 13:15 Christians are told, "Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name."  What are at least two ways this can be done according to Ephesians 5?

Answer:  Paul says we should address one another in "psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart" (Ephesians 5:19) and "giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Ephesians 5:20).  Evidently Paul thought that ones doing this would be "making the best use of the time" (Ephesians 5:16)

Question Two:  According to Ephesians 5:22-24, how should the wife act in relation to her husband?

Answer:  The wife is to submit to her husband.

Question Three:  According to Ephesians 5:25, how should a husband act in relation to his wife?

Answer:  Husbands are to love their wives as much as Christ loved the church.

Question Four:  Since a wife is to submit to her husband, does this mean that the wife should be seen as a servant?

Answer:  No!  This passage is also clear that husbands are to love their wives as much as themselves (Ephesians 5:28 and 33).  Paul also adds that "no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it" (Ephesians 5:29).  In the New Testament, the husband/wife relationship is so close that one could not consider doing anything but honoring and cherishing the other.  The submission in this relationship is the same as the submission to one another which Paul uses to introduce this thought, "submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ" (Ephesians 5:21).

Question Five:  What does the physical relationship of husband and wife show in the spiritual realm?

Answer:  The relationship between husband and wife is a physical, flesh-and-blood picture of the relationship between Christ and the church (Ephesians 5:32).
